Growth
the constant and conscious process of learning and integration through experience in pursuit of authenticity and excellence.
Growth can be a conscious process in which we challenge ourselves in such a way as to become more complex, building our sense of self and self-worth while at the same time gaining greater understanding of our interdependence with others and with our environment. Growth keeps us fresh, invoking our natural creativity and enthusiasm. Growth is the surest way to experience fulfilment.
In his book ‘Flow’ psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi reported on decades of research into happiness and flow experience: one which occurs where we are stretched just enough to make it fun. Making it too easy induces boredom; making it too difficult induces anxiety.
A flow experience leaves the self more complex than before and such complexity is what we commonly refer to as personal growth. Complexity is the result of two broad psychological processes: differentiation and integration. Differentiation implies a movement towards uniqueness, toward separating oneself from others. Integration refers to its opposite: a union with other people, with ideas and entities beyond the self.
Having fun is not easy in that doing what is easy does not allow us to have fun. Our ideas about what might be fun are the product of suggestion and fantasy – that is what ideas should be, however we can all too often prove to be ill-prepared, ill-equipped or even make ourselves ill if we try to pursue them. Having fun at the expense of others and your own well being is fruitless selfish indulgence. As a guiding principle, good fun is good for you and good for others.
Growth is fun and engenders happiness for your self and for others. So, live every day as though it were your last…and learn as though you would live forever.
